Chasing History Takes Us inside Texas

Since 2008, historian and antiquarian Chase Pipes has served as co-owner of the Smoky Mountain Relic Room at Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Sevierville, Tennessee. A passionate historian, history educator, and go-to expert in his region for information on all things related to fossils, meteorites, minerals, artifacts, and geology, Chase Pipes is also the popular host of Chasing History, a video series available on a dedicated YouTube channel.

On Chasing History, he takes his audience on virtual tours to many of the digsites where he acquires the artifacts he sells. As careful about excavation processes and artifact preservation as he is in the observance of all regulations pertaining to the trade in antiquities, he has shown a knack for making his highly specialized field of expertise fun for viewers of all ages.

One recent series of Chasing History episodes opened the doors of the Texas Through Time Museum in Hillsboro, Texas. Paleontologist Andre Lujan of the museum provided a personalized tour of his team’s process for the preparation, preservation, and archiving of the fossils they bring in from their digs.

Lujan explained how the museum’s team works with great precision to clean off all dirt and debris from the fossils they discover. Viewers even got a close-up view of the recently discovered skull of a young mammoth. Temporarily glued together to stabilize it and encased in layers of plaster to protect it on its journey to the lab, it awaited further work by the museum’s experts.
